Caterpillar, Inc.
Large Engine Foundations

This massive concrete project occupies over 30,000 SF of floor space inside Caterpillar’s Large Engine Center in Lafayette, Ind. It consists of a series of heavy foundations, anchors, coolant trenches and conveying devices to accommodate a line of machining equipment to build heavy diesel engines.

The floor slab was removed, building foundations were modified, and the area was excavated to a depth of approximately 16’ below the plant floor. All of the excavated earth was trucked outside, and over 6,000 cubic yards of concrete and 450,000 lbs of reinforcing steel were placed to construct the foundations.

Crews worked two 10 hour shifts, 6 days per week, and the project was completed with no lost time accidents or injuries. The project earned an “Award of Excellence” from the Associated Builders and Contractors.
